Anthony J. Caputy was born in Washington, DC in1953. His father, Victor W. Caputy, served 37 years as a federal prosecutor for the District of Columbia.

Dr. Caputy received his Bachelor of Arts, and subsequently, his medical degree from the University of Virginia in 1980. He completed a general surgery internship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1981. He received residency training in neurological surgery under Alfred J. Luessenhop at Georgetown University from 1981-1986. Following the completion of his residency, Dr. Caputy joined the faculty at Georgetown University. While at Georgetown he established the neurological intensive care unit, becoming the unit’s first medical director. In 1994, he joined the faculty of the George Washington University as an associate professor. In February of 1999, Dr. Caputy became the acting department chairman, and in October 2001 he was appointed chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the George Washington University and became the first Hugo V. Rizzoli Professor of the department. Dr. Caputy maintains a general neurosurgery practice with clinical and research interests focused in the areas of epilepsy and spinal surgery.

Dr. Caputy is a member of the Society of Neurological Surgeons, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons He is a member and past president of the Neurosurgical Society of the Virginias. And is a member and past president of the Washington Academy of neurological Sirgery. He is also a member of the joint section on Neurotrauma and Critical Case AANS-CNS and the Joint Council of State Neurosurgery Societies AANS-CNS, and he is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

He is married to Martina (Tina) Putnam, and they have three children: Michelle, Daniel, and Martina.
