Timothy B. Mapstone was born in Cleveland, Ohio to Boyd and Adelle Mapstone. He continued to live in Cleveland until attending college at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Applied Mathematics and a Bachelors Degree from the Sloan School of Management. In that year, he began medical school at Case Western Reserve University, and entered the Neurosurgical Program at the University Hospitals Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University with Dr. Frank E. Nulsen as Chairman. At the beginning of his Chief Residency year in Neurological Surgery, Dr. Robert A. Ratcheson became Chairman of the Division of Neurological Surgery at Case Western University upon Dr. Nulsen’s retirement. Dr. Mapstone served as Dr. Ratcheson’s first chief resident in his new position.

He then took a research fellowship in biochemistry for a year at the end of his chief residency, when he joined the faculty at Case Western Reserve University as Chief of the Neurosurgical Services at the VA Medical Center in Cleveland. After two years, the opportunity to rekindle a longstanding interest in the neurosurgical care of children and neuro-oncology became available when the Pediatric Neurosurgical Attending position opened at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital of Cleveland. After moving to Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital, Dr. Mapstone began to concentrate more on the practice of pediatric neurological surgery as a faculty member in Dr. Ratcheson’s Department of Neurological Surgery. During that time, Dr. Mapstone was instrumental in helping to develop and organize the newly required Neuroscience clerkship for third- and fourth-year medical students at Case Western Reserve University.

In 1994, he left Case Western Reserve University to join the three-man Pediatric Neurosurgical Division at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. In 2000, he moved east on Interstate 20 to Atlanta as Professor of Neurological Surgery, Vice-Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery, and Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery, at Emory University. In 2005 Dr Mapstone became the Chair and Wilkins Professor of Neurological Surgery at the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Mapstone’s academic interest continues to be the care of children with neurosurgical disease with a special interest in both clinical laboratory and brain tumors in children. He continues to be active in both undergraduate and graduate medical education .

Dr. Mapstone is a member of a number of medical societies and has served on the Executive Committee of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the Section of Pediatric Neurological Surgery of the AANS and CNS, and is the Past President of the American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgeons. His bibliography includes 75 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and 60 abstracts and symposium contributions. He currently maintains an active practice in pediatric neurological surgery and an active research interest in the molecular biology of brain tumors and the activities of protein kinase C and sodium channels in their role in the maintenance of malignant brain tumors.

He was married in October of 1979 to Barbara Jean Talian when he also became an instant father to Barbara’s two children, Todd and Terre. They are now grown and living on their own. Barbara and Tim enjoy outdoor activities in the southeast, especially when they are joined by their extended family and friends.
