M. Sean Grady obtained a BA in Biology from the University of California, San Diego in 1977 and his M.D. degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1981. Dr. Grady received his training in Neurosurgery at the University of Virginia under the guidance of Dr. John Jane. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Grady was recruited as a faculty member to the University of Washington in 1987. During his tenure at the University of Washington, he became Professor of Neurosurgery and Vice Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery. While at the University of Washington, Dr. Grady’s research interests focused on traumatic brain injury. He obtained numerous NIH research grants including a Clinical Investigator Development Award, an RO-1, and a Program Project Grant. Dr. Grady also developed a diverse clinical practice including cerebrovascular surgery, complex spine, cerebrospinal trauma, and functional neurosurgery. While in Seattle, Dr. Grady was instrumental in developing and directing the regional Think First program to prevent brain and spinal cord injury.

In 1999, Dr. Grady was recruited to the University of Pennsylvania as the Charles Harrison Frazier Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery. He has continued his NIH funded research interests in traumatic brain injury, an area that has a strong historical tradition and a current world class effort at the University of Pennsylvania. His clinical practice now focuses on cranial base surgery and minimally invasive approaches.

Dr. Grady is the author of over 150 peer-reviewed clinical and basic science research articles and holds five patents. He has served as Chairman of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Neurosurgery. Dr. Grady also serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Trauma, Journal of Neurotrauma, and Youman’s Neurological Surgery.

Dr. Grady and his wife Debbie have six children, three boys and three girls. Favorite family activities include travel, spending time in Laguna Beach and a wide range of outdoor activities.
